Best Ways to Learn a Foreign Language

There are many ways to learn a foreign language. There are classes, exchange student programs...you name it. I honestly have no idea what the best way to learn a foreign language is. (Notice the blog is called Misadventures in Language Learning.) You have to make mistakes in order to know the best way you learn languages. The "best way" could be defined as a way that simultaneously immerses you in the language and culture, and enables you to comfortably use your target language. Just because a way is good for you doesn't mean it's good for everyone.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I'm going to point out ways to learn a foreign language that I or others think may be good. Just because it's here doesn't mean it'll work for you. (Just because it's here doesn't even mean it will work for me...) Still, you can't learn if you never make any mistakes.

Immersion
This is the only way to learn a language. You will not be able to use a language if you have never been surrounded by it. How can you? If you do not practice a language, be it by yourself or with someone fluent in it, you simply will not be able to use it.
  • Kid Shows- watching shows geared toward little children in your target language is a great way to immerse yourself in it. Typically, important themes are repeated multiple times. Also, pictures are used to show children what is being talked about. Colors and numbers are often practiced. I recommend watching a show like Dora the Explorer or other kid shows.
  • Pimsleur- This is a language learning program that comes highly recommended. I have used it to learn Japanese. Pimsleur works on immersing you in the language and the culture at the same time. It teaches you how to use the language immediately. Also, you can usually find it at your local library. I love this thing.
  • Rosetta Stone- Of course you've heard of this. Rosetta Stone shows you pictures of what you're talking about, and has you match it with the correct word. I find this to be somewhat boring, but it may work for other people.

Do you know of any good language learning programs? Do you disagree with what I've said here? Please feel free to comment!
